Well Water, Softeners, and the 50/50 Fix (No RO Unit Needed)

If you’re on a well, or your house runs everything through a water softener, aquarium water gets confusing fast. People tell you softened water is bad for fish. People also tell you well water is “too hard.” Both can be true at once, and the fix that gets pushed the most — buy a reverse-osmosis unit — is usually more machine than you need.
Let me untangle it, because the real answer is cheaper and simpler than the internet makes it sound.
First, why softened water is a problem. A home water softener works by trading out the minerals that make water “hard” — mostly calcium and magnesium — and swapping in sodium. Great for your pipes and your soap. Not great for fish, because fish actually use calcium and magnesium. Those minerals build shells, bones, and healthy slime coats, and they’re a big part of what keeps your water chemistry steady. Strip them out and replace them with salt, and you’ve made water that looks clean but is missing the stuff your tank runs on.
So 100% softened water is out. Fair enough.
Now the other side. Straight well water is often the opposite problem — loaded with minerals, sometimes very hard, sometimes carrying iron or other things you’d rather not guess about. For a lot of fish that’s actually fine or even good, but “very hard” can be a lot, and it varies well to well.
Here’s the part nobody says plainly: you already own the two ingredients to fix this. Your softened tap and your unsoftened tap. The unsoftened line — usually the outside spigot or a dedicated hard-water tap at the kitchen sink — carries the minerals. The softened line is gentle but mineral-poor. Blend them, and you can dial the water to almost anywhere you want.
That’s the whole trick. A 50/50 mix is the classic starting point: half softened, half unsoftened. It splits the difference — enough minerals back in for the fish, not the full hardness of raw well water. From there you adjust to your own taps, because every house is different.
To do this with any confidence, you need to actually measure, and this is where a cheap kit pays for itself many times over. Grab a liquid GH/KH test kit — the drop-count kind, not the paper strips, which are wildly unreliable. GH is your general hardness, basically the calcium and magnesium. KH is your carbonate hardness, which acts like a buffer that keeps your pH from swinging around. Both matter, and the drop kit gives you a real number instead of a vibe.
The process is boring, which is the point:
Fill a bucket with your blend — start at 50/50. Test the GH and KH. Write the numbers down. If GH is too low, add more unsoftened water next time. If it’s sky-high, lean more softened. Keep notes until you land on a mix that puts you in a comfortable range for the fish you keep. Then that ratio becomes your recipe. Every water change, same recipe, same result.
Two habits make this genuinely low-effort once you’ve found your number.
One: keep it simple by keeping it consistent. Once your recipe works, don’t reinvent it every week. Mix the same ratio, test occasionally to make sure nothing’s drifted, and move on. Stable and repeatable beats “perfect” every single time.
Two: know the difference between topping off and changing water — it trips people up constantly. When water evaporates, only the water leaves. The minerals stay behind and get more concentrated. So when you top off to replace evaporation, use your softened (low-mineral) tap, or the tank slowly creeps harder and saltier over time. When you do a real water change — actually removing old water and replacing it — use your full blended recipe, because you’re replacing minerals that left with the old water. Top off soft, change with the blend. Get that one distinction right and your parameters basically hold themselves.
Do you ever actually need an RO unit? Sometimes. If your well water has a real contamination issue, or you’re keeping fish that demand very soft, very specific water, RO gives you a blank slate to build on. But that’s a narrow case. For most of us keeping community fish and healthy plants, blending the two taps we already have — and testing until the numbers are right — gets there for the price of a bucket and a test kit.
You don’t need a machine to fix your water. You need a ratio and a notebook.
